Tried and True Potty Training Essentials

Potty training can be one of the most challenging but rewarding parts of parenting. While every child learns at their own pace, having the right tools and strategies can make all the difference. Whether you’re just starting or looking for ways to make the process smoother, here are some tried and true potty training essentials that can help you and your child succeed.

Books

Before jumping into the process, it’s a great idea to introduce the concept of potty training with books. The best potty training books can make learning fun and take away some of the mystery for your child. Books like Potty by Leslie Patricelli or A Potty for Me! by Karen Katz are favorites among parents, and our Education Team! These books help normalize the experience and get your child excited about using the potty.

Bathroom Essentials

The biggest potty training must-have on our list is of course a potty chair! Many families may choose to use an adapter for the toilet which is a smaller seat that attaches to the regular toilet. You might want to start with both as options for your child, and see which one they feel more comfortable with. Some families like the potty chair because of its small size and that it is lower to the ground. Other families like using the adapter because it is one less transition your child will need to make, and it may be easier for them to use the toilet in public spaces as they will be used to the larger size. Whichever you choose, the key is finding what makes your child feel confident and comfortable as they learn this new skill!

The best potty training supplies go beyond just the potty chair. You’ll want to stock up on soft wipes, toilet paper, and a sturdy step stool so your child can easily reach the toilet if using an adapter.

Clothes – And lots of them!

Accidents are a natural part of potty training, especially in the beginning. Being prepared can make the process much smoother. When away from home, you can be ready by having two changes of clothes with you at all times. Don’t forget a plastic bag for the soiled items! At home, you might consider keeping some clothes in the bathroom so you don’t have to leave your child unattended while searching for fresh ones.

Positive Reinforcement

Potty training is a big milestone, and your child will benefit from plenty of positive encouragement along the way! Celebrate their efforts by acknowledging their progress with excitement and praise. A simple “You did it!”, a high five, or even a happy dance can go a long way in building their confidence. The key is to focus on their achievements—big or small—so they feel supported and motivated to keep going. With patience and encouragement, your child will gain the independence and confidence they need to succeed!

Potty training is a big milestone, and with the right tools, patience, and encouragement, your child will get there! At our school, we understand the ins and outs of potty training. Our dedicated and experienced teachers guide children through the process with proven strategies, encouragement, and support. We partner with families every step of the way to make this transition as smooth as possible.
